THE OLD SCHOOL
Location: Bistrica ob Sotli
Category: Architectural and ethnological heritage
This was the first school building, located on the former parochial land, built in 1829. Since this building became too small at the end of the 19th century, the municipality took the credit and built a new school in the South-Western part of the village. The new school was opened in 1895. There were classes taught in this building until the Second World War.
At the end of the war, the school was reopened. In November 1948, the school was visited by the Prime Minister of FLRJ, Josip Broz Tito. He donated 100.000 dinars for the renovation of the school. While there was no gym, they made a playground where the school garden used to be. In 1968, they also built a gym.
In 1974, there was an earthquake which damaged the school. To add up, one year later the ceiling broke above the corridor, which alarmed everyone and the wish for a new school became even stronger. They started building it in 1977 and opened it in 1979. The old school was only partially in use since then, but after the renovation in 2008, it was fully reopened.
