THE WHITE CROSS, ZAGAJ
Location: Bistrica ob Sotli
Category: Skulptures, monuments and memorials
The memorial, called by the locals also the Štadler's Cross ('Štadlerjev križ'), stands by the main road Bistrica-Podčetrtek. According to tradition, it is a 'kužno znamenje' ('the plague memorial'). It consists of three parts: the base, the pillar and the chapel. The pillar has decorative bevelled edges and a rectangular cross-section, on which a stone chapel with four shallow areas rests. The top is concluded by an expeller-like roof which used to bear the Maltese Cross.
Upon renovation in 1992, the memorial was placed onto a concrete base, somewhat raised and detached from the road and added a new cross, very different from the previous one. There is no year engraved on the memorial, but it was probably built around 1750.
