MARKEC’S CROSS, ZAGAJ
Location: Bistrica ob Sotli
Category: Skulptures, monuments and memorials
This brick monument, also locally called the Cross of Markec, stands a bit higher over the beginning of the Obrež hamlet, on the clearing above Markec’s Mill. It is made of massive stone blocks. According to the stories, it was supposedly built in 1573 on top the buried Turkish soldiers, which were defeated in the vicinity. At night, it is said, the monument becomes haunted, which is why people have always avoided it from dusk on.
Below the top, it has four pointedly-fractured cavities, which have triangular arches, carved from one piece of rock. There is a rosette and a circle engraved but barely visible. The circle is similar to the one at Osojnik’s memorial.
