THE TIED-UP CROSS, ZAGAJ
Location: Bistrica ob Sotli
Category: Skulptures, monuments and memorials
Next to the footpath to Svete gore, there is a monument made of a pillar with a Toscan capital, a chapel with semicircular cavities and a pyramid roof with a cross on top. In the semicircular part of the monument, there used to be visible depictions of the Virgin Mary, St Martin, St George and St Giacomo.
On top of the cross there are the Mary's chronogram and IHS inscribed. There is also a heart pierced with swords depicted. On the monument there is an inscription saying the following: “DAS. CREITZ. HAT. LASSEN. MACHEN. JERG NARAT. GOT ZU EHRENAMEN 1642”.
Due to the fact this monument was broken, it was strengthen with iron around it at the bottom. This is where the pilgrims used to put flowers and greenery when walking the path to Svete gore. They believed that by doing so they could foretell the future. If the flowers and greenery remained green, they would be save from death for at least a year.
