The basic mechanism of nature protection of the European Union Natura 2000 network includes ecologically important areas of the Member States of the European Union. This areas with its biogeographic balance considerably contribute to the preservation of natural balance and biodiversity. This network, whose purpose is the preservation of endangered species and specific habitat types, currently covers about 30% of the Croatian area, including the Sutla River.
