THE RUINS OF ST. MARGARET’S CHURCH, KUNŠPERK
Location: Bistrica ob Sotli
Category: Sacral objects
The church of St. Margaret on Kunšperška gora is first mentioned in writing in 1545, even then- as a very old church. It was built on top of a prehistoric settlement. Chaplains of St. Peter used to read weather masses in the church and received cider in return.
In 1777 the masses were transferred to St. Mary Magdalene in Orešje at the initiative of the caretaker at Bizeljsko. With Joseph II.’s decree the church was closed down. Today, the only preserved part is the circumferential wall, outlining its shape.
